Dear Parents,

Welcome to our first issue of the Piti Suksa Newsletter of 2007 and our first newsletter online. The first three months of this academic year have already passed and our young new students have already adjusted themselves to the school’s environment. They enjoy being at the school. This semester there are four new expat teachers, Kroo Yuliya, Kroo Phuong, Kroo Matt, and Kroo Sue, as well as four new Thai teachers, Kroo Peng, Kroo Kratair, Kroo Fang, and Kroo Bui, and one substitute teacher Kroo Tanya.

This year we would like to promote team building and human resource development. The school sponsors two Thai teachers to attend Montessori long distance learning in Lower and Upper Elementary at MWEI, Australia. The school also provides an Intensive Montessori Course which is divided into theory, practical and examination. We are also placing more attention on child safety, so we built the “love shack” (a grass roofed Sala in front of the Lower Elementary class), with a foam padded floor. It is very good for the very young students to play there during playground time and teachers also do activities with students at the “love shack”.

We would also like the parents to visit the school website more often where you can follow up-to-date information and activities, and view the many photos in our Gallery. From now on we are going to putthe newsletter in our website to reduce the schools paper usage and printing costs. We are teaching the children to use the Earths limited natural resources wisely, and to reduce their consumption. We plan to plant more trees to support our Earths healing. We also appreciate the parents joining our school meeting and the workshop on Language and other activities. We also appreciate and welcome the parents to talk and exchange your ideas for nurturing and educating your children.

Dear parents!

It has been a pleasure for us to work with your kids every day. We have a peaceful atmosphere in our classroom and we can see that all the children are happy to come to the school every morning. We are learning many different things and many new English songs. The kids are trying to speak English with us so it is very important for us to keep our environment only English speaking. We introduced many new works to the children and they learning how to choose work by themselves.

This week we are talking about different plants and learning how to take care of them. To make our environment more beautiful and to make our kids to be more responsible we would like to ask each child in our class to bring one plant from home. You can bring any plant from your house and let your child take care of it in there classroom or you can go together to the store and get a new one. Let you child choose one! And let them enjoy taking care of this plant everyday in their classroom. We also would like to know the name of this plant, so make a little label with the name, please.

Dear parents,

We are now almost coming to the end of our first semester. There has been a few fundamental changes at the beginning of the semester as you all already know. Despite all these, the children have shown great progress in the past months. Taking over the classroom with 25 lively children is a privilege for me.

 

I’ve learnt a lot from them. There was not a day that I did not enjoy being at school with them. This group of children is very social. Many of the shy ones are now beginning to open themselves up. The classroom dynamic is great! The children are kind and helpful towards each other. We are having less and less problems day by day. We do have some “heroes” and “heroines” who are slowly unfolding towards the path of Normalization. A longer concentrated work period can be seen. I will be leading this class until the end of the semester. The next teacher will arrive here in October and will take over the class after the October break. I’m very proud of the children and my co-teachers. They have really proven the philosophy of life, the “Montessori” philosophy.

Before the July break our classroom theme was on seasons and as of now we are doing basic cultural theme comprising of geography, animal kingdom and some simple science. The children have shown how unique each of them are. Their questions, their inputs and their ideas are so different from each other. When all this gets put together, an immense picture of their thoughts and imagination amazes me of how their minds work.

During the parent observation period not many parents were able to come. You are welcome to make an appointment for the observations and conferences with me. Not many parents showed up for the teacher-parent workshop either. I would like to encourage you to attend the workshops whenever there is one.

 

It is very important that you know and understand what your child is learning at school. When your child talks about their day at school and what work they have done, you too could give your feedback and ideas and share with them all the fun and excitement. The child would be very proud and happy.

Lastly, we, the team of teachers of Kindergarten class would like to thank you for trusting your child in our care. Thank You.

Field trip Lower Elementary

Thursday the 16th of August both the Elementary classes went on a field trip to Jal-lae village and Huay Mae Sai waterfall. The project for the month of August is ‘the rainforest’ and it was great to be able to take the children out for a walk through the forest and see a lot of the things we had talked about.

Before the trek to the waterfall we visited Ban Ja-Lae. The Lahu chief invited us into his house and told us about their life in the village. He also showed us around the rest of the village, the museum, their photo gallery and their temple.

As interesting as the morning was, most children in our class enjoyed themselves more wading through the shallow river to see one of the waterfalls. To see the other one we had to walk for about fifteen minutes. And even though it had started to rain by then, we all had a great time.

Our rain forest project.

Lower Elementary B had a rain forest project this month.

We enjoyed working in a natural environment since we have a real little piece of rain forest in the middle of our classroom. We could actually smell the fresh green scent and hear the water coming down from a tree. We learned to take care of our jungle. We sprayed the plants to keep the environment humid, so the different kind of plants could keep on growing. We also learned about the layers and the water cycle of the rain forest.

 

After our fieldtrip to the waterfall and the Hill Tribe village we got even more inspired. The museum at the village showed us how the Hill Tribes came to that place and how they live.

The waterfall was amazing. We crossed a little stream, where the water was deep and cold. It was exciting, because only one of us had ever done that before. The waterfall was beautiful. We came close to feel all the mist around us and we did not mind that it was raining too. We were wet anyway.

Back in our class we learned much more about rain forests, the areas, the people, the creatures and plants.

Did you know for instance:

• That the humming bird are tiny birds, some no longer than your middle finger and that their wings beat 80 times a second! They can fly upside down, or even backwards.  

• The rain forests of the world are in danger. They are being destroyed very quickly. So please help to save the rain forest. We can tell you how!

The essential lessons in Montessori elementary program are the Five Great Lessons, which is called “Cosmic Education”.

The Five Great Lessons are connected stories that span the vast history frames from the beginning of the Universe, formation of our solar system and earth, first life on earth, followed by many species of life including plants and animals, and finally the evolution of humans on earth, which are different from others by “love”. These stories are called “Story of the Universe”, “the Coming of Life”, and “the Coming of Humans”. The last two stories are the “Story of Numbers”, and the “Story of Communication in Signs”, which include history of numbers and languages.

The Great Lessons provide the children an overview or big picture of everything in their lives, e.g. earth, sun, moon, stars in the sky, living and non-living things, numbers and language they are using, and the beginning of their own lives.  The stories build a concept of interdependence and the interconnectedness of everything for example if there was no earth, no sun, no other living and non-living things, there would not be us today. From this big picture leads to the details of disciplines: astronomy, biology, zoology, physical science, geography, social studies, mathematics and language, which the children will explore and investigate through research work, individually or in groups, from many resources, e.g. library, experiments, Internet, and resources outside the school.

Today, educators believe that learning the big picture and understanding the interconnectedness of each subject are the most effective learning process, regarding recent researches on learning functions of thebrain.

Beside academic knowledge and skills, Cosmic Education helps create a sense of interdependence and unity of all in children, which hopefully will build good feelings in people and the world around them and finally they will give back, making contributions to the society, and help creating a peaceful world. That is the true meaning or the ultimate goal of Montessori Education.

 

         บทเรียนสำคัญในมอนเตสซอรี่ระดับประถมคือ  

The Five Greast Lessons ซึ่งเมื่อรวมกับวิชาต่างๆ แล้ว

 มอนเตสซอรี่จะใช้คำว่า Cosmic Education  หรือขอเรียกเป็นไทยให้เข้าใจง่ายๆ นะคะว่าเป็น วิชาครอบจักรวาล

       ห้าเรื่องที่ยิ่งใหญ่นั้นเป็นเรื่องเล่าเรื่องราวในประวัติศาสตร์นับตั้งแต่ กำเนิดของจักรวาล กำเนิดของสิ่งมีชีวิตบนโลก กำเนิดมนุษย์  ซึ่งสามเรื่องแรกนี้เป็นการเล่าที่มาของจักรวาล การเกิดขึ้นของดวงดาวต่างๆ มาจนถึงระบบสุริยะของโลกเรา จนกระทั่งมีสิ่งมีชีวิตชนิดแรกเกิดขึ้นบนโลก ตามมาด้วยสัตว์และพืชต่างๆ อีกมากมายหลายล้านชนิด ผ่านมาหลายยุคหลายสมัย เป็นเวลาหลายล้านปี จนกระทั่งมีวิวัฒนาการเป็นมนุษย์ขึ้นมาบนโลก มนุษย์ซึ่งแตกต่างจากสัตว์อื่นตรงที่มี ความรัก

        ส่วนสองเรื่องสุดท้ายจะเป็นเรื่องราวของวิวัฒนาการของมนุษย์ อารยธรรมต่างๆ ประวัติความเป็นมาของตัวเลขซึ่งเป็นที่มาของวิชาคณิตศาสตร์  และที่มาของภาษาที่ใช้สื่อสารกันของมนุษย์ 

   เรื่องราวอันยิ่งใหญ่นี้ จะทำให้เด็กๆ ได้เห็นภาพรวม (big picture) ของทุกสิ่งทุกอย่างรอบตัวเขา  ที่มาของโลก ของดวงดาวบนท้องฟ้า ของทั้งสิ่งมีชีวิตและไม่มีชีวิต  วิวัฒนาการตัวเลข ภาษาที่ใช้  จนกระทั่งมาถึงตัวเขาเอง ได้เห็นการเชื่อมโยงของสิ่งต่างๆ  ได้เห็นว่าการเกิดขึ้นของมนุษย์ หรือของตัวเขานั้น มีความเชื่อมโยงกับสิ่งต่างๆ ในโลกอย่างแยกจากกันไม่ได้  เช่น ถ้าไม่มีโลก ก็จะไม่มีตัวเขา ถ้าไม่มีสิ่งมีชีวิตอื่น ก็จะไม่มีเขาในวันนี้เช่นกัน

        จากภาพรวมนี้ เขาก็จะค่อยๆ ได้เรียนรู้ลงไปในรายละเอียด ซึ่งก็คือวิชาต่างๆ เหมือนกับที่เราเคยเรียนกันมา เช่น ในเรื่องของกำเนิดจักรวาล ซึ่งเด็กๆ ในห้องประถมปลายได้รับฟังไปในสัปดาห์ที่แล้ว หลังจากนี้เด็กๆ จะได้เรียนใน   รายละเอียดเกี่ยวกับดาราศาสตร์ วิทยาศาสตร์ (สสาร แรง พลังงาน) และภูมิศาสตร์  ซึ่งการเรียนรู้ในรายละเอียดนี้ จะผ่านการเรียนแบบ research  ให้เด็กได้หาความรู้เองจากแหล่งต่างๆ เช่น ห้องสมุด อินเตอร์เน็ต การทดลอง หรือ แหล่งความรู้นอกโรงเรียน

       และในครั้งต่อไปเมื่อเขาได้รับฟังเรื่องที่สอง คือ กำเนิดสิ่งมีชีวิตบนโลก ซึ่งจะเป็นเรื่องของชีววิทยา นิเวศวิทยา ส่วนเรื่องที่เหลือ ก็จะครอบคลุมทั้งวิชาวิทยาศาสตร์ ชีววิทยา และสังคม วัฒนธรรม

      การเรียนให้เห็นภาพรวม และให้เห็นการเชื่อมโยงของวิชาต่างๆ เป็นสิ่งที่นักการศึกษาในปัจจุบันยอมรับว่าเป็นการเรียนที่ได้ผล และสอดคล้องกับการเรียนรู้ของสมองมากที่สุด 

      นอกจากผลที่ได้ในเชิงวิชาการคือ ความรู้ในวิชาต่างๆ แล้ว Cosmic Education ยังมีจุดหมายที่จะให้เด็กๆ ได้เห็นความเชื่อมโยงและพึ่งพาอาศัยซึ่งกันและกันของสิ่งต่างๆ ความเป็นหนึ่งเดียวกัน  ซึ่งจะชักนำให้เกิดความรู้สึกที่ดีกับโลกกับผู้คนรอบๆ ตัวเขา และความหวังสุดท้ายคือ เขาจะรู้สึกอยากตอบแทนหรือให้กลับต่อผู้คนและสังคม เพื่อการอยู่ร่วมกันอย่างสงบสุข และนี่คือความหมายที่แท้จริงและเป็นเป้าหมายหลักของการศึกษาแบบมอนเตสซอรี่         

   

  

Temperature is the biggest problem all around the world now! The Upper Elementary class is going to have the “Global Warming Project”. Here are some of what you can do to slow down the heating of the world.

 

	Switch off the fans & lights before you leave your class.
	If your house is not far from school, use your bike to save energy. Make sure your car is running efficiently (for example, your tyres are fully inflated) to save gasoline. You can also carpool with friends.
	Use less air conditioning.
	Plant trees in your class or all around, which help remove carbon from the atmosphere and get more oxygen.
	Start recycling, reuse paper in your class, at home, and in the office as much as possible.

The wonderful world of physical education is at all times elaborating and expanding into untraversed realms of bliss and fulfillment. This term the students have enjoyed a rigorous regime of running, stretching, badmintoning, basketballing, kick-balling, and foursquaring.

The Upper-Elementary class has recently begun an intensive yet thorough unit of the science of basketball which shall crescendo with a friendly three-on-three tournament at the end of the term.

In other news worth relating, Kroo Harry and I are extremely excited to be in charge of running and planning the end of term celebration. It’s time to forget everything you ever knew about last day activities, and brace yourselves for…The Ultra-Magnificent End of Term Celebration Extravoganza!

สวัสดีคะผู้ปกครองทุกท่าน

ขอต้อนเริ่มเปิดเทอมใหม่และขอต้อนรับนักเรียนทุกคนในห้องเรียนวิชาภาษาไทยคะ  แม้ว่าจะทักทายช้าเกินไปกันสักหน่อยนะคะ  แต่ก็ขอต้อนรับน้อง ๆ ทุก ๆ คนนะคะ  ในปีนี้ห้องเรียนวิชาภาษาไทยในระดับประถมต้นระดับชั้น ป.๑-๓ น้อง ๆ จะได้เรียนกับครูต่ายคะ ซึ่งปีนี้น้อง ๆ ระดับชั้น ป.๓ มีด้วยกันทั้งหมด ๑๓ คนคะ  ในช่วงเปิดเทอมแรกน้อง ๆ ส่วนใหญ่ก็กำลังปรับตัวในการเรียน  เพราะว่ายังไม่คุ้นเคยกับการทำงานและรับผิดชอบงานที่มากขึ้น  แต่น้อง ๆ ก็ใช้เวลาปรับตัวกันเพียงแค่ช่วงระยะเวลาหนึ่งเท่านั้นเองคะ  หลังจากที่โรงเรียนปิดJuly Break  แล้วเปิดโรงเรียนมาอีกครั้งหนึ่ง 

น้องๆทุกคนก็ปรับตัวกันได้สามารถรับผิดชอบงานของตัวเองได้ดีมาก

ซึ่งแต่ละคนต่างก็มีวิธีการทำงานของตัวเอง  แม้บางคนจะทำงานช้าหน่อยแต่งานก็เสร็จเรียบร้อยทุกครั้ง หรือบางคนก็ทำงานได้อย่างคล่องแคล่วและมีน้ำใจคอยช่วยเหลือเพื่อน ๆ ในห้องคะ  และบางคนก็กล้าซักถามพูดคุยกับคุณครูตลอดเวลา   สำหรับเนื้อหาในการเรียนวิชาภาษาไทยตอนนี้ก็ยังคงเน้นในเรื่องการอ่านหนังสือ

และหัดเขียนคำและแต่งนิทานสั้น ๆ ๒-๓ บรรทัดคะ มาถึงพี่ ป.๒ กันบ้างนะคะในเทอมนี้เนื้อหาการเรียนจะเป็นเรื่องที่ยากขึ้นอีกซักหน่อยนะคะคือน้อง ๆ จะได้เรียนการอ่านคำที่มี ห นำ  การอ่านคำที่ไม่ตรงกับมาตราตัวสะกด  และการอ่านคำผันวรรณยุกต์ต่าง ๆ   และการเขียนความคิดสร้างสรรค์ที่น้องๆ แต่ละคนอยากจะเขียนคะ และยังคงเปิดโอกาสให้น้อง ๆ เลือกอ่านหนังสือที่ตัวเองสนใจเช่นเดิมนะคะ

และพี่ ป.๓ของเราในเทอมนี้ก็ยังเรียนเนื้อหาในระดับชั้นของตนเอง

ที่ยังเน้นในเรื่องของหลักภาษา  และในเทอมนี้จะเน้นการอ่านให้มากขึ้นคะโดยให้น้อง ๆ ฝึกอ่านจับใจความสำคัญของเนื้อเรื่องที่อ่าน  และฝึกตอบคำถามจากเรื่องที่อ่านคะ  ในเรื่องของการเขียนก็ยังให้น้อง ๆ ฝึกเขียนคำศัพท์หรือคำยากทุกสัปดาห์คะ

ห้องเรียนภาษาไทยยังคงมีคำศัพท์ให้น้อง ๆ นำไปทบทวนที่บ้านเช่นเดิม ในชั้นป.๒-๓ จะให้คำศัพท์น้องไปฝึกทุก ๆ วันจันทร์แล้วนำสมุดฝึกมาคืนทุก ๆ วันพฤหัสบดีนะคะรวมถึงหนังสือที่นำไปอ่านที่บ้านด้วยจะให้น้อง ๆ นำไปอ่านทุก ๆ วันศุกร์และนำกลับมาคืนในวันอังคารถัดไปคะ  น้อง ๆ คนไหนนำหนังสือไปอ่านแล้วยังไม่ได้นำมาคืนกรุณานำมาคืนที่ห้องครูต่ายด้วยนะคะ  ส่วนน้องคนไหนไม่ได้นำหนังสือไปอ่านสามารถมารับหนังสืออ่านได้ที่ห้องของตนเองทุก ๆ วันศุกร์คะ ครูต่ายจะเตรียมไว้ให้คะและน้อง ๆ สามารถมาเลือกหนังสือที่ตนเองสนใจได้ที่ห้องครูต่ายคะ

Hi Moms, Dads, and Kids.

I am sure that you have noticed that our library has gone through a gradual transformation since the start of the new semester with a completely new, open and airy layout, as well as a comfy reading area replacing the old style aisles. In order to complete the library improvement process it is necessary that we obtain some new books. We are in great need of up-to-date English language reference books (subjects such as Biology/Nature, Science, Technology, Thailand, etc.) for Lower and Upper Elementary students so that they can learn the valuable art of book based research, as apposed to merely typing a topic into Google.

 

Also, the ‘Easy Books’ are showing their age. Since this section receives the most traffic in our library, many of the books are becoming tattered and worn with broken spines and lost pages. The library budget is not sufficient due to the high cost of imported books. Please, if you have any books at home that you do not need anymore or you wish to make a much needed monetary gift, the library and students will make good use of your donations. For more information on making a monetary donation please speak to Khun Gar our school accountant. Thank you very much for your kind support.

ห้องภาษาไทยประถมปลาย

สวัสดีครับชาวปิติศึกษาทุกคน วันเวลาผ่านไป ฤดูกาลเปลี่ยนผัน อากาศ เปลี่ยนแปลง คิดดูสิครับอยู่ดีๆ ผมก็ได้มาเป็นครูสอนภาษาไทยชั้นประถมปลายและมัธยม  ซึ่งเป็นหน้าที่อันทรงเกียรติมาก ทำให้ตัวผมเองได้พัฒนาการสอนมากขึ้นเยอะมาก เพราะเด็กๆ แต่ละคนทั้งเก่งและขยัน ดังนั้นต้องเร่งทำสื่อและพัฒนาสื่อใหม่ๆที่ท้าทายมากขึ้น  เพื่อเด็กๆจะได้มีความรู้อย่างเต็มที่ทั้งด้านหลักภาษา  การใช้ภาษา  วรรณกรรมและวรรณคดี

ตอนนี้ในชั้นประถมศึกษาปีที่ 4 ได้ทบทวนความรู้ในเรื่องหลักภาษาไทย เด็กๆทุกคนขยันทำงานมาก ทำถึงวันละ 3 ชิ้นงานเลยนะครับ และบางคนยังขอการบ้านเพิ่มอีกด้วยนะจะบอกให้

ชั้นประถมศึกษาปีที่  5  ตอนนี้กำลังนี้กำลังง่วนอยู่กับวรรณกรรมและวรรณคดีทั้งฝึกอ่านออกเสียงและฝึกอ่านจับใจความ สรุปใจความเยอะแยะมาก แถบนิทานพื้นบ้านให้อ่านด้วย

ส่วนชั้นประถมศึกษาปีที่ 6 ถึงมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 2 สนุกกับการทำโครงงานภาษาไทย และล่ารางวัลจากสนามไอที

ทิ้งท้ายลองเล่นเกมดูนะครับ หาตัวละครจากเรื่องรามเกียรติ์ให้ได้ให้มากที่สุดจากตาราง

Hello, my name is Sue Colon and I recently joined Piti Suksa in August.  I spend my mornings interning with Kroo Harry and Kroo Fang in the Lower Elementary class.  I am really enjoying my time here with the children.  Kroo Harry has already taught me so much on how to give many lessons and run interesting circles.  He is truly a great teacher and I feel fortunate to have him as a mentor.

In the afternoons I teach the EFL class to the Lower and Upper Elementary students.  We have been busy playing a lot of introduction games and making our journals.  We will now begin practicing grammar, phonics, and writing skills.  Most of this will be taught through Montessori materials, games, projects, and fun.  It has been great because I get to work with all the children in the school! (except for the little ones). We have only been meeting for three weeks but so far classes have been going very well and the children seem to really be enjoying English.  We are still in the process of making English materials, so if anyone would like to donate any games or books that would be greatly appreciated.
