Dear Parents,

Welcome to the first issue of the Piti Suksa Newsletter for 2008. Nine weeks of this academic year have already passed; our students are enjoying being at the school, if you would like to see more of what happens at the school please visit our website at www.pitisuksa.org to see the many fun activities and field trips.

 

The first Parents Meeting has already taken place with the parents electing Khun Ae and Khun Nae to be their parent’s representatives on the School Board; also 4 sub-committees were formed to assist the school.

· the first group is the Education Sub Committee; headed by Khun Pattana as the chair person andK. Willhem, K. Pavinee, Dr. Chanpun, K. Angkrit, K. Molly, and Kroo Nita are members.

· the second group is the Financing and Fund Raising Sub Committee; the members are Khun Chompoo as the chair person as well as K. Willhem, K. Jeff, K. Pornchai, and K. Sutiluk.

· the third group is the Parents Relations and Communications Sub Committee; Kroo Ked and Khun Big are the chair persons and K. Willhem, K. Jeff, K. Pornchai, K. Sutiluk are the other members.

· the last one is the School Safety and Environmental Sub Committee; K. Nae is the chairperson and Kroo Jay as her assistant.

We would really appreciate the parents joining our school meetings.

Starting this month Kroo Kees Aarts is our new expat. EFL Teacher replacing Kroo ploy in the EFL class since July 21st. Recently David, a former pupil of our school returned from overseas and is happy to be back in Kroo Harry’s class. Kroo Pang is leaving since she wishes to further her studies in Australia; she will work with us until the middle of August. We are seeking a new assistant teacher to help Kroo Yuliya in the Kindergarten A class.

This year we would like to promotethe traditional Thai customs and manners, such as “Sa-Wad-Dee”,“Khob-Khun” and “Khor Thod” from the students for greeting, thanking and apologizing. Please feel free to talk and exchange your idea of nurture and education your children and youare welcome to join any sub-committee’s activities as interested.

Dear Parents,

We were very excited to start this new school year in a nicely prepared environment and we were waiting for 4 new students and our new teacher Kroo Oi. We have 20 students in our class now; the beginning of this semester was very busy and loud in the mornings! It is more normalized and quiet now with everyone busy working in their different areas. The Sandpaper letters, Sandpaper numbers, pasting, sawing, watering the plants, making beautiful designs using the Metal Insets – all these materials are very popular in our classroom these days.

Through work, children explore their environment and develop a sense of community, it is important to involve children in daily tasks. Children should be given increasingly more responsibilities as they grow for example they can help you at home to set the table, water the plants with a small watering can, dust and fold napkins. Older children can care for animals and gardens and help wash the dishes. It is important for parents to prepare a space for the child that is consistently their own, from the first moment he or she enters the home. Every time a child drops a vase, spills their glass, or rips their clothes, parents should help them learn without increasing their humiliation. The child should understand that their errors are not an indication of their character, nor are they a sign of their weakness. Mistakes are always an opportunities to learn, to think, to remember that we are dependent upon each other. Children like adults, must sometimes ask for help.

We have a new activity in our schedule this year – the “Mystery Reader”. The Mystery Reader can be anyone who would like to come and read to the children in the circle on Fridays at 2:30pm, so please don’t be shy, and sign your name on the list outside of our classroom.  Don’t forget to keep it a secret from your child that you are coming because the “Mystery” is something that we don’t know! Come and read any story and surprise everyone! Thanks to everyone who already came and read for us; we had lots of fun!

Our new teacher Kroo Oi fits our atmosphere very well, she is gentle, caring, respectful and a very hard working person.

It is time for another “good bye”... This time the “Good Bye!” is for Kroo Pang who became one of my best friends here in Chiang Rai and one of the best colleagues I’ve ever had. She is going to study in Australia. Thank you, Pang for everything from all of us, it is sad that you are not going to be with us here every morning but I am very happy that you will have a chance to learn something new in your life. I believe that we will work together again sometimes in the future!

And thank you to all of you for your help, understanding, support and the smiles every morning!!!

Hello…I’am Kroo Gee

I am a new teacher in Kindergarten with Kroo Anna I teach Thai language. In my class we have 16 children. I am so happy to stay with 16 children they are all so cute and fun. I have a lot of experience from this school especially the kids are cute even they sometimes naughty but still the kids, sometime it makes me have a new idea. And the teachers here are kind and friendly and I am happy to work with them.

Positive reinforcement plans in lower elementary A

An individual help plan is one of the tools a teacher has to help children acquire a certain skill or develop their behaviour in a certain way.

At the moment there are about seven children working on a skill or a behavioural pattern that I would like them to change in our class. The things children are practicing are quite divers; paying attention to what the teacher is saying during circle time, sitting in the circle nicely, not getting off your chair until the work you have on your table is finished, trying to finish a work within a certain amount of time or practicing asking other children questions when something happens they do not like. It could be anything really.

An action plan helps me do my job and helps a child become more aware of what it is doing. Often a child does not even know that their actions are disruptive or not desired in class. And even if they do know they often don’t care about being disruptive. A positive reinforcement approach rewards a child to show us behaviour that is desired in class. Initially a reward is given because hardly anybody will put any effort in to changing their behaviour if there is not going to be an obvious benefit to doing so. Without a reward, why should I even try?

Here is an example. During circle time child X almost never sits properly, it constantly has to be reminded of what the rules are. Also it does not pay any attention to what I am saying. The goal of a behavioural help plan could be: the child is aware of how to behave in the circle and shows the teachers.

After I have developed the plan of action, I sit down with the child. I talk about what it is I have seen her do and I talk with her on when to practice how to sit properly in the circle and pay attention. I will explain how to use the ‘smiley-form’, and how I will remind her of practicing every time we are going to sit in the circle. I will ask her how many times she thinks she will be able to pay attention during circle time. It could be just two times out of five. A low number is good because then the chances are high the child will reach her goal. So if the child says twice a day, for four days, that would make the goal for one week eight smiley’s on the form by Friday morning. If achieved the kid can play a game, draw or do whatever it wants for fifteen minutes. After every circle time I have to remind the child to fill in their form. And at the end of the day we review how the practicing has gone.

Reading this it may seem complicated and elaborate, but it is actually quite simple. The difficult part is that I have to be very consistent in reminding the child of when it is going to practice and to remind her when to fill in the form.

Of course sometimes I have to adjust the goals, or adjust what exactly it is we are practicing. The child and I both have to find a manageable mode of operation. A lot of this is trial and error. I can never be sure of what is going to work, every child is unique.

Behavioural help plans always take time. I don’t get to see a result very quickly but they do almost always pay off in the end. Don’t forget that when a child comes into lower elementary class they already have a distinct and often well established personality; they can already have strong preferences and dislikes. There is only so much room for change.

Even so, we are able to help them want to make some changes. If it is apparent for the child that it will benefit in some way, it will make an effort. The Montessori way is to help the child affect the desired change by itself. Forcing children, scaring them, or threatening them into doing something only works counter productive and will never result in lasting positive change.

Dear Parents,

This is our first newsletter for this school term. The children are all settled and each has a very busy schedule at the school, the Grade 1 students are becoming more independent and choosing more work of self-interest and the Grade 2 students are busy with just anything not forgetting to mention the socializing part while the Grade 3 students seem to be the busiest group and there is a lot for them to explore and enjoy. Homework is being given on a regular basis depending on the child’s pace, the results have been satisfactory. Self-motivation in the children is apparent week by week.

There is a change in our classroom project “Garden”, which directly applies to wall painting as well however due to the rainy season the paint on the painted areas is now peeling off, therefore this project is postponed to next semester.

Last week, the children went on a field-trip to the Rai Mae Fah Luang to see the beautiful buildings and the landscaped gardens. They had a lot of fun, some of them were full of questions wanting to know the history of the many things on display, but most important of all, it was the shared moments being together and sharing each others company (and snacks). The beautiful garden and the relaxed environment made the children very happy.

 

July has been a very short working period due to many holidays and activities at the school so I haven’t put up the monthly meeting schedule, I shall be putting it up again for August so please feel free to sign in your names. My first three months at Piti Suksa have really been a great experience.  The children are wonderful and the school is very well organized.  The upper elementary class is a fantastic group of kids and teaching them alongside Kru Nat has been a tremendous joy for me. They are a very creative group and usually quite eager to learn.  Our weekly swimming classes have been a nice way to have fun while getting some exercise and learning an important life saving skill.  In addition to these weekly outings, we have two field-trips scheduled - one for the end of July and one at the start of August.  On July 28th we will visit Doi Ding Dang where the children will be able to create their own clay artwork and watch the pottery making process from start to finish.  To coincide with the upcoming “Thai Law Week”, we will visit the Chiangrai Courts on the morning of August 5th and then later that afternoon we will check out the Chiang Rai Prison.  This outing will introduce the students to the Thai Legal System, which incidentally, like the pottery process, they will also witness from start to finish

Since the beginning of the school year, the class has explored many different topics.  Science lessons have involved topics relating to the first two key stories; The Story of the Universe and The Coming of Life.  We began the year by looking into the origins of the universe, the formation of galaxies, stars, and of course, our own solar system.  We touched on subjects such as; gravity, inertia, time and space, light speed, matter, quantum physics, and quantum mechanics – the study of particles and sub-atomic particles. The class carried out experiments which helped the students to understand the meaning of volume, mass and density. We examined the solid, liquid and gaseous state of matter, and also explored the rock cycle, carrying out tests to identify different rock samples.

In mathematics, the grade four students have covered the following: multiplying, dividing and rounding off whole numbers, tables and graphs, angles, fractions and word problems. The grade five students have reviewed many of these same topics and have also been introduced to the methods for calculating the area of triangles!  I’d like to thank the parents again for their support in obtaining the math books. The books have been a great help for the students and most of the kids seem to really be enjoying them them!

My focus in English has been to get the kids reading, writing and speaking as much as possible.  Most of the children already love to read, though many need encouragement when it comes to speaking.  Each month, the students of the upper elementary class prepare a speech to be read in front of the class. Many of the students have been showing a real improvement in their public speaking abilities with each successive month.  I’ve asked the children to read one English novel per month.  While I allow a half-hour per day to read in class, I ask that the kids read at least three nights a week at home.  I encourage parents to periodically check up on their children’s reading ability and to ask them whether or not they are reading as much as they should be to complete their monthly reading requirements.

ขอขอบคุณประสบการณ์อันมีค่าจากเด็กนักเรียนที่น่ารักทุกคนที่นี่และการจัดการที่ดีของโรงเรียน ตลอดระยะเวลา 3เดือนที่ผ่านมา ทำให้ผมมีความสุขกับการที่ได้ร่วมงานกับครูแน็ท และเด็กๆทุกคนในห้องประถมปลายที่น่ามหัศจรรย์และมีความใฝ่รู้ ใฝ่เรียนในทุกๆเรื่อง

ในแต่ละสัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมาพวกเราได้ไปว่ายน้ำและเรียนรู้ทักษะการช่วยเหลือชีวิตจากการจมน้ำร่วมกัน นอกจากนั้นกิจกรรมพิเศษนอกโรงเรียนที่จะจัดขึ้นอีกก็คือ ในวันที่ 28 กรกฎาคมนี้ พวกเราจะไปทัศนศึกษาที่ ศูนย์ผลิตเครื่องปั้นดินเผา ดอยดินแดง อำเภอแม่จัน ในครั้งนี้เด็กๆจะได้เรียนรู้ประสบการณ์ในการทำเครื่องปั้นดินเผาและการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานของตนเอง และถัดไปคือช่วงต้นเดือนสิงหาคม เพื่อเป็นการระลึกถึงเกียรติคุณและวันคล้ายวันสิ้นพระชนม์ของพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ พระองค์เจ้ารพีพัฒนศักดิ์ กรมหลวงราชบุรีดิเรกฤทธิ์ ิ์ พระบิดาแห่งกฎหมายไทย ในระหว่างสัปดาห์ของวันรพี วันที่ 5 สิงหาคม 2551 นี้ทางห้องประถมปลายจะไปทัศนศึกษาที่ศาลจังหวัดเชียงรายในช่วงเช้า และช่วงบ่ายที่เรือนจำกลางจังหวัดเชียงรายซึ่งในครั้งนี้เด็กๆจะได้เรจะมีหนังสือให้เด็กอ่านคนละ 1 เล่ม โดยที่เด็กๆสามารถแบ่งเวลาอ่านหนังสือได้สัปดาห์ละประมาณ 3 ครั้งที่บ้านและวันละ 30 นาทีที่โรงเรียน เพื่อให้การอ่านหนังสือประสบผลอย่างเต็มที่ ในการนี้ผมต้องขอความกรุณาจากผู้ปกครองช่วยดูแลบุตรหลานของท่านในการอ่านหนังสือที่บ้านด้วยนะครับ

ผมยังคงรอดูผลงานของเด็กๆอีก 2-3 เดือนข้างหน้าก่อนที่จะจบเทอมแรก หากผู้ปกครองท่านใดมีข้อแนะนำหรือต้องการสอบถามในเรื่องต่างๆ ขอเชิญพบผมได้ที่ห้องเรียนประถมปลายในระหว่างเวลา 15.30-16.00 น.ของทุกวัน ขอขอบคุณอีกครั้งสำหรับความไว้วางใจในการดูแลบุตรหลานของท่านและความร่วมมือทุกๆอย่าง

ียนรู้เรื่องการตัดสินคดีความ ศึกษากระบวนการยุติธรรมของไทย และกฎหมายไทย นับได้ว่าเป็นประสบการณ์อันยิ่งใหญ่เลยทีเดียว

บทเรียนวิทยาศาสตร์ที่ผมได้นำเสนอตั้งแต่ต้นเทอมที่ผ่านมาคือเรื่องของการกำเนิดจักรวาล การเกิดกลุ่มดาวกาแล็คซี่ และระบบสุริยจักรวาล ซึ่งทำให้เด็กๆมีโอกาสในการเรียนรู้เรื่องของ แรงโน้มถ่วง แรงเฉื่อย เวลาและอวกาศ ความเร็วของแสง สถานะและพลังงาน อนุภาคของอะตอม เด็กๆได้ทำการทดลองเกี่ยวกับสถานะของของแข็ง ของเหลวและแก็ส ค้นคว้าเรื่องหิน วัฏจักรของหินและการสำรวจหินแต่ละชนิดต่างๆกัน

ในวิชาคณิตศาสตร์ นักเรียนชั้น ป.4 ได้เรียนรู้เรื่องการคูณ การหาร จำนวนใกล้เคียงกับจำนวนเต็ม ตารางและกราฟ มุม เศษส่วนและการแก้โจทย์ปัญหา ส่วนนักเรียนชั้น ป.5 ได้ทบทวนทักษะคณิตศาสตร์ในเรื่องเดียวกันและเริ่มต้นการหาค่าของมุม ผมต้องขอขอบคุณผู้ปกครองทุกท่านสำหรับการอนุมัติการซื้อหนังสือคณิตศาสตร

์ที่มีประโยชน์กับเด็กๆในครั้งนี้เป็นอย่างมากซึ่งทำให้พวกเขาเพลิดเพลินไปกับการเรียนรู้มากยิ่งขึ้น

ในส่วนของวิชาภาษาอังกฤษ เด็กๆได้เรียนเกี่ยวกับการอ่าน การเขียน การพูดหน้าชั้นเรียนและการพูดในที่สาธารณะ สิ่งที่เห็นได้ชัดก็คือเด็กๆทุกคนที่นี่รักการอ่านหนังสือ ดังนั้นเพื่อเป็นการส่งเสริมให้นักเรียนรักการอ่านมากยิ่งขึ้นในแต่ละเดือนผม

Hello,

Everything around us is fresh and green and our spirits are high as we kick off yet another school year. We are glad to welcome two new students to Junior High School this year - Mancharie and Game.

We have been reading “Animal Farm” by George Orwell - a satirical piece of literature. It represents human characteristics in an analogy of animal instincts and has surely left us with some insights! There has been an improvement in writing summaries with practise.

We have covered a lot of ground in English through grammar exercises, poetry, essays, comprehensions and venn diagrams. All students have selected their own books to read and write book reviews as follow up assignments.

In cosmic education, we have had fun conducting experiments and doing research. We have done role plays and learnt through amusement. Junior High School had an opportunity to go for a field trip to Mae Fah Luang University library to gather extra information regarding their research. At present they are busy making a chart on the cretaceous period- and I am sure it’s going to be a success as they all are good team workers!!

As a challenge for self improvement, all students monitor themselves daily on a personal development chart. I am hopeful this will lead to self gratification for the individuals concerned and further on to the community and then on to a wider sphere reminding us that the children are the future of our world.

ห้องเรียนภาษาไทยประถมต้น

สวัสดีคะผู้ปกครองทุกท่าน

     ขอต้อนรับนักเรียนทุกคนและผู้ปกครองทุกท่านคะ   แม้ว่าจะเป็นการทักทายที่ช้าไปสักหน่อยสำหรับการเปิดเรียนในปีการศึกษานี้  ในเทอมนี้มีน้องที่ขึ้นมาเรียนภาษาไทยในระดับชั้น   ป.1  13 คนด้วยกันคะ น้อง ๆ ทุกคนดูมีความสนใจ  ตื่นเต้น  และต้องปรับตัวในการเรียนวิชาภาษาไทยเช่นกัน  ไม่ว่าจะเป็นเรื่องของความรับผิดชอบในการทำงานให้สำเร็จ  ความพยามยามในการอ่าน  การเขียน  ซึ่งตอนนี้ก็เปิดเรียนมาได้ประมาณ 3  เดือนแล้ว พบว่า น้อง  ๆ หลายคนปรับตัวได้ดี  สำหรับเนื้อหาในการเรียนของระดับชั้น ป.1 ในเทอมนี้ ครูต่ายได้เน้นในการอ่านสะกดคำ  การเขียนลายมือให้สวยงาม  สอนการผันวรรณยุกต์  และการอ่านคำที่มีตัวสะกดสำหรับน้อง ๆ บางคนคะ   งานที่น้อง ๆ ทำในห้องเรียนส่วนใหญ่จะเป็นแบบฝึกหัด  การแยกแยะการเขียนคำถูกคำผิด  แต่งประโยคสั้น ๆ คะ

     ในระดับชั้น ป. 2  เปิดเรียนในเทอมนี้  ยังคงทบทวนบทเรียนของระดับชั้น ป. 1 ให้น้อง ๆ กันก่อนคะแล้วถึงเริ่มเนื้อหาในระดับชั้น ป. 2  น้อง ๆ ป. 2  ทุกคนรู้จักหน้าที่ของตนเอง และรู้ว่าต้องรับผิดชอบงานอะไรบ้าง  แต่ก็ยังมีที่ต้องเคยเตือนให้สนใจและรับผิดชอบงานในห้องเรียน เนื้อหาระดับชั้น ป. 2 ในเทอมนี้น้อง ๆ เรียนเรื่อง อักษรนำ  สระ  การผันวรรณยุกต์  คำที่มีตัวสะกดในแม่ต่าง ๆ  การอ่านจับใจความด้วยคะ

    

ในระดับชั้น ป. 3  ปีนี้ ครูต่ายขอแสดงความยินดีกับน้อง ๆ ทุกคนเลยนะคะที่สามารถทำคะแนนสอบ National Test ได้เป็นที่น่าพอใจ ซึ่งน้อง ๆ ในระดับชั้น ป. 3 ทุกคนปีนี้ทุกคนยังคงต้องเตรียมความพร้อมในเรื่องการสอบ NT Test  อีกครั้งเช่นเดิมคะ เทอมนี้น้อง ๆ จะได้เรียนเรื่อง การผันวรรณยุกต์  ไตรยางศ์  มาตราตัวสะกด  คำที่มี ฤ ฤๅ  คำควบแท้  ไม่แท้  คำที่ประวิสรรชนีย์และการอ่านจับใจความด้วยคะ

      นอกจากนี้ทุก ๆ วันศุกร์ครูต่ายจะมีแฟ้มการอ่านให้น้อง ๆ นำกลับไปอ่านที่บ้านแล้วนำกลับมาคืนวันจันทร์คะ  เพื่อที่ผู้ปกครองจะได้ทราบพัฒนาการการอ่านของน้อง ๆ ด้วยคะ  และในเดือนสิงหาคมนี้ครูต่ายจะให้น้อง ๆ ได้เริ่มเขียนตามคำบอกโดยจะให้คำศัพท์ไปฝึกที่บ้านทุกวันจันทร์แล้วนำมาเขียนที่โรงเรียนคะ

      ผู้ปกครองท่านใดอยากดูงานน้อง ๆ หรืออยากพูดคุยเกี่ยวกับพัฒนาการเรียนของน้อง ๆ เชิญได้ที่ห้องเรียนภาษาไทยระดับประถมได้ทุกเวลาคะ  ช่วงนี้เป็นฤดูฝน ฝนตกเยอะมากและอากาศเปลี่ยนแปลงบ่อย รวมทั้งมียุงลายด้วยคะซึ่งตอนนี้โรคไข้เลือดออกกำลังระบาด ขอให้น้อง ๆ ทุกคนดูแลสุขภาพให้ดีนะคะ แล้วพบกับจดหมายข่าวฉบับหน้าคะ

สวัสดีท่านผู้ปกครองทุกท่าน สำหรับการเรียนการสอนหลังเปิดภาคการศึกษาที่กำลังย่างเข้าสู่หน้าฝนอย่างชื่นฉ่ำในปีนี้นั้น ในระดับชั้นประถมศึกษาตอนปลาย รวมถึงระดับชั้นมัธยมศึกษาตอนต้นได้มีการออกแบบบูรณาการการเรียนการสอนในรายวิชาภาษาไทย กับ วิชาสังคมศึกษา ศาสนา และวัฒนธรรมเข้าไว้ด้วยกัน เพื่อจะให้นักเรียนได้ใช้กระบวนการเรียนรู้ด้วยความเข้าใจในภาคปฏิบัติ รู้หน้าที่ มีจริยธรรม และสามารถใช้ภาษาไทยอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพมากยิ่งขึ้นในทุกกาลโอกาส

      โดยในระหว่างเปิดภาคการศึกษาที่ผ่านมา รายวิชาบูรณาการไทย-สังคมศึกษาฯ ได้พยายามจัดกิจกรรมแบบมีส่วนร่วมในวันสำคัญต่างๆ ตามช่วงเทศกาลประเพณี และการยกย่องบุคคลสำคัญ โดยเชื่องโยงเข้ากับมาตรฐานการเรียนรู้ที่กำหนดไว้ว่าควรจะได้รับตามลำดับชั้นอย่างครบถ้วน

      กิจกรรมที่ผ่านมา รายวิชาบูรณาการไทย-สังคมศึกษาฯ ร่วมกับทางโรงเรียน ได้จัดให้มีการประกอบพิธีไหว้ครู, การปลูกต้นไม้ในวรรณคดีไทย, การจัดแสดงวัฒนธรรมสี่ภาค, การฝึกทำขนมไทย, และมีกิจกรรมเสริมอื่นๆ ที่ต่อเนื่องไปตลอดทั้งปี เช่น กิจกรรมการทดลองเพาะเห็ดในระดับชั้นมัธยมศึกษา เป็นต้น

      นอกจากนี้แล้ว ยังมีกิจกรรมทัศนศึกษายังสถานที่ต่างๆ ที่น่าสนใจ เช่น แหล่งผลิตเซรามิก ศาลยุติธรรม และอื่นๆ ในอนาคตตามที่ได้วางแผนงานกันเอาไว้ โดยมุ่งหวังเพื่อให้นักเรียนได้ประโยชน์สูงสุดจากการรับรู้ตามสถานการณ์ที่เป็นจริง ซึ่งจากการสังเกตพบว่า ทำให้นักเรียนของเรามีความใฝ่รู้ใฝ่เรียนเพิ่มขึ้น และมีความรู้อย่างเข้าใจมากขึ้นกว่าการเรียนแบบเดิม

ตั้งหวังว่า ผู้ปกครองจะสังเกตเห็นความเปลี่ยนแปลงของเด็กๆ ที่น่ารักทุกคนในทางที่ดีขึ้นนี้

Welcome back to all the familiar little faces, bubbly little bodies, and big personalities in little packages. It’s no surprise that these first couple of months has been very full but smooth and I am very pleased because this year the students have been borrowing a lot of books from the library (and returning them) and respecting this calm quiet space and its precious contents. But please return the book bags when returning the books!

 

Christmas has finally arrived for the library, ha ha!

Special thanks to Mrs. Sirichan Thanawuth and her daughter Nong Jar for donating two very beautiful books that use pop-ups, removable dioramas, games and cardboard models to make learning about Rain Forest Animals and Knights  a lot more interesting and fun, and to Nong Jar for kindly helping me out here in the library during her Summer vacation. Also many thanks to Khun Napat, Nong Evi’s mother for donating some books and magazines and to Kroo Ploy and her mom for donating a whole stack of fictional short stories as well as the many framed photos of the kids in our school which are making our library feel more homely. As part of making our library a more inviting and comfortable space for everyone to read in I put a notice up asking for a sofa or two (new or second hand), so far Khun Nipha mother of  Nong Nadia has kindly donated 500 baht and Kroo Poonam has donated a very cute set of children’s hand carved solid wooden chairs, rocking chairs and bookends to the library (and some of the other classrooms) some of the bookcases at the back of the library have been slightly rearranged so as to create a cozy and semi-private reading room generating a lot of interest with the students.

To end I would just like to clarify the library hours, these are from 8:30am through until 4pm, students can borrow books during the lunch break or during class hours if they have the permission of one of the teachers (in their class or on playground duty), for Kindergarten A and B students it is necessary to come with a teacher or parent. On occasion I might not be in the library during lunch times in that case if there is another teacher present students will be allowed to use the library, if not then the teachers on lunch duty will not allow the students to go to the library.

How I learn to spell at the age of 24

I am somewhat ashamed to admit that I had never learnt how to spell English during all the years of my study. And up until I had the opportunity to teach at Pitisuksa School, I never realized this.

 I had the privilege of meeting the previous EFL teacher Sue who showed me how she had been teaching phonetics to the students. Imagine how fascinated I was when Sue taught me the sounds of each letter in the alphabet. There I was, wide-eyed like a child, learning how to spell correctly at last! Suddenly, everything made sense. It was like an epiphany. So how did I manage to write all these years? To tell you the truth, I really don’t know. I guess that it must have been through memorization. It’s not a bad method and it has worked perfectly for me. However, had I had the opportunity to learn phonetics at a young age, spelling and writing would have been much, much easier.

Dear people.

Let me first introduce myself.

My name is; Cornelis-Petrus-Rudolf Aarts. It’s a bit of a long name so everyone calls me; Kees.

I am the new EFL teacher on the Piti Suksa School and I can tell you that it makes me feel very happy. The students are cheerful, open-minded children; the school is situated in a clean, healthy environment and the staff excellent people.

Thailand, and specially Chiang Rai, is not new to me. For the last 25 years a lot of time has been spent in this beautiful country both professional and for leisure. I dare to say it is like a second home to me.

Teaching, as I experience it, is not just a job to do. To contribute to the upbringing of children, whoever they are, whatever there background, is a great pleasure. If I can fulfill the task to help educate our next generation and maybe therefore make our world even a better place, it is definitely worthwhile.

My plan for EFL class is, to continue on the same line as the previous teacher, Kroo Sue. I got to know her personally when helping her to finish off making material for the EFL class. To use games and create a fun atmosphere for students to learn, well, I can’t think of a better way and both, Kroo Sue and I, found out we are on the same line about how to teach.

Naturally to anyone concerned, if there are any questions or you just want to pop by for a chat, you can find me, most of the time, in the EFL classroom next to the office.
