Upper Ele News 12/02/2008
Dear Parents,
First of all, I would like to share with you about the exciting and interesting field trip to Lampang on Tuesday, February 5. We started off at 7.30 am., our first stop was at Pratu Pha. The children learned about the mountain of limestone, observing the differences from the other mountains that they had seen before. Kroo Manoj, our special teacher, brought with him some geologist tools and when he explored the stones we saw many tiny fossils of sea creatures such as corals in these stones, which led to the conclusion that this area used to be bottom of the sea back in millions of years ago. How interesting! At Pratu Pha, the children had also seen some cave paintings.
Then we went straight to Mae Moh, Lampang. After having lunch, we went into the museum. We had seen a 3D movie about the creation of the universe, formation of the earth, the happening of life on the earth and human evolution. After the movie, we moved to another room where timeline of life has been displayed beautifully from the ages of invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles or dinosaurs and finally, the mammals. There were many fossils of plants and animals displayed in the next room.
The next section of the museum was about the coal mine, the physical features of the mine,
how coal is used in electricity industry and at the end, the environmental effect.
On the way back, we stopped at one area which is claimed to be an old volcano. We found only basalt, which is a kind of rock specifically found around the volcano but not definitely indicating volcano presentation.
Then we headed back to Chiagrai and arrived at school safely. Although it was a short one-day trip, but hopefully, the direct experience might deepen the knowledge within the children.
In the classroom, we are still exploring the animals. The children have learned about the world biomes, their geographical features and animals living in each biome. Then this week, they will learn more about animal adaptations and how animals are related to humans.
On Friday 15, there will be a guidance activity for upper elementary students about their further studies after Pratom 6. Kroo Nat has invited people from Samakkhi School and Family Learning Center (FLC) to present about their schools. Parents are all welcome to join and listen to these presentations at 9 – 10 am. for Samakkhi School and 2.30 – 3.30 pm. for FLC.
These two weeks are the observation weeks for parents. The observation time is morning from 9.00 to 11. 00 Am., Monday to Thursday. Please reserve your time for observation in front of the classroom.

Dear Parents,
First of all I would like to apologize for the delay of our upper ele newsletter. It seems like both teachers and children are engaged more and more in learning and lessons. However, communication with parents is also the heart of the school. School and parents need to work closely together to help our children develop successfully in all aspects, i.e. physically, mentally, socially and intellectually.
Since the beginning of the second semester, I have told the second Great Story “the Coming of Life”, and after the story the children have explored more on living things on earth, especially the animals. After the New Year break, they have been given lessons on Five Kingdoms, Animal Classification, Comparison among the Vertebrates and Animal Needs. They have done research on animals. After getting the information, written reports and oral presentations to the class have been successfully completed. At the time of the oral presentations, I could feel the pride in them on their research work which meant that we have reached our goals in education for cultivating a joyful and life-long learning.
From Jan. 14 – 24, I will attend Montessori Workshops on Cosmic Education and language for 9-12 years, in Melbourne, Australia. Kroo Nat will take care of the class. During this period, the students will have a special project on Earth Science, which will be led by our guest teacher, Kroo Manoj Vacher. He holds a master degree on Earth Science and has worked as a teacher in Roong Arun School in Bangkok. One of the objectives of this project is to cultivate thinking and scientific skills which include observation, questioning, analytical thinking and problem solving skills. In order to get real experiences after classroom learning, we will have a field trip to visit Geology Museum in Lampang, a cave and volcano on the way as well. Good news for our class is that we have got many new materials on Mathematics, Language and cultural subjects. These materials are mainly exercise cards and activities, more relevant to Montessori curriculum.
Hopefully, these new materials will keep attracting the children’s interest and fun in learning.

The children have worked as usual for the last two weeks. Basically, they need to choose work of mathematics, language and cultural subjects, i.e. geography, science and history, to do everyday. This semester, more research and report work will be initiated. There are many research topics covering geography, science and history subjects in the classroom for them to choose depending on their interests. After the research, they need to write formal reports and some may be asked to report orally to the whole class.
This week, on Wednesday and Thursday, I have demonstrated some experiments under the topic of the three states of matter. These were the first few presentations that would inspire, motivate and make them question. Then after a few weeks, they will be guided to practice basic scientific skills such as doing experiments, observing and collecting data, and using microscope.
Next week, the upper elementary children will have drama class for the whole week. We will have Kroo Jid who has years of experience in teaching drama instruct the class. Many thanks to Kroo Ked, Lamtharn’s mom, in helping us find the teacher. They will learn to express their feelings, controlling their movements and voices in acting. Kroo Jid will guide them how to write a play. We are going to have a play under “Global Warming” theme and hopefully they will have a performance before the mid-term break in December.
As for the ceramic class, I would like to thank Dr. Suthee, Pai’s dad, and Khun Chantanee, his staff, again. We do appreciate your contributions to the school.

ในช่วง 2 สัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมา เด็กๆ ทำงานกัน ซึ่งเป็นปกติที่จะต้องเลือกงานวิชาคณิตศาสตร์ ภาษาอังกฤษ ภูมิศาสตร์ วิทยาศาสตร์ และ ประวัติศาสตร์ ทำทุกวัน ในภาคเรียนนี้ยังได้เริ่มการค้นคว้าและการรายงาน โดยได้จัดหัวข้อในวิชาวิทยาศาสตร์ ภูมิศาสตร์และประวัติศาสตร์ให้เด็กได้เลือกค้นคว้าตามความสนใจ หลังจากการค้นคว้าหาข้อมูลแล้ว ต่อมาจะต้องทำรายงานและอาจจะมีการรายงานโดยพูดให้เพื่อนๆ ในชั้นเรียนได้ฟังกันด้วยค่ะ
ในวันพุธและวันพฤหัสของสัปดาห์นี้ ได้สาธิตการทดลองวิทยาศาสตร์ ภายใต้หัวข้อเรื่อง “สถานะของสสาร” การแสดงสาธิตครั้งแรกนี้ เพื่อสร้างแรงบันดาลใจ สร้างแรงจูงใจ และให้เด็กได้สงสัยและตั้งคำถาม โดยที่หลังจากการนำเสนอครั้งนี้ ประมาณ 2-3 สัปดาห์ เด็กๆ จะได้เริ่มฝึกทักษะวิทยาศาสตร์ขั้นต้น เช่น ได้ทำการทดลองเอง ได้ฝึกการสังเกตและบันทึกข้อมูล และรวมถึงการฝึกใช้กล้องจุลทรรศน์
สัปดาห์หน้านี้ เราจะมีการเรียนละครกันทั้งสัปดาห์ โดยมีคุณครูจิ๊ด มาช่วยสอนค่ะ วิชานี้ต้องขอขอบคุณคุณครูเกด (เกศสุดา คุณแม่น้องลำธาร) ที่ช่วยติดต่อหาคุณครูมาสอนให้ค่ะ ในวิชาละคร เด็กๆ จะได้เรียนการแสดงออกของอารมณ์ต่างๆ การเคลื่อนไหว การใช้เสียงที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการแสดง และนอกจากนี้จะได้ฝึกเขียนบทละครกันเองด้วยค่ะ ภายใต้หัวข้อ “ภาวะโลกร้อน” ซึ่งเรากำลังเรียนเป็นแบบโครงงานกันอยู่ คิดว่าเด็กๆ จะได้มีการแสดงจากบทละครของตัวเองในวันงานก่อนวันหยุดสิ้นปีนี้ค่ะ คอยรอชมกันนะคะ
สำหรับการฝึกปั้นเซรามิค ทางโรงเรียนต้องขอขอบคุณ ดร.สุธี คุณพ่อของน้องปาย และ คุณฉันทนีย์ ขวัญยืน ผู้ช่วย อีกครั้ง ที่ได้กรุณามาช่วยเป็นคุณครูพิเศษ เห็นเด็กๆ ตั้งใจปั้นดินกันมากๆ คิดว่าในเร็วๆ วันนี้ น่าจะได้มีผลงานไปโชว์ให้คุณพ่อคุณแม่ดูค่ะ

There were activities of global warming project going on last week. We have discussed about the global warming effects. I have asked the children to share their journal writings of “what you can do to help lower the global warming effect!” by reading what they have written to their friends during circle on Wednesday. They have shared some ideas and hopefully this kind of activity will make them aware of the interconnectedness of things on earth, both living and non-living. Besides, we have also set aside a box for collecting used papers for recycle.
On Thursday, those who brought their old T-shirts have started making cloth-bags and put more decorations on Friday. I think they would feel proud using their own made bags and at the same time help saving the earth.
On Friday, the children have attended the ceramic class. They have learned some techniques and will do more next week.

สวัสดีค่ะ
สัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมา เรามีกิจกรรมที่เกี่ยวข้องกับโครงการ “Global Warming” คือ การพูดคุยกันถึงผลกระทบที่เกิดจากภาวะโลกร้อน เด็กๆ ได้อ่านบทความและ เขียนลงในสมุด journal ว่า “เราจะช่วยลดภาวะโลกร้อนอย่างไร” ในเช้าวันพุธทุกคนได้นำสิ่งที่ตนเขียนมานำเสนอให้เพื่อนๆ สิ่งที่คาดว่าเด็กๆ จะได้เรียนรู้คือ ความเกี่ยวเนื่องกันของสรรพสิ่งบนโลก ไม่ว่าจะเป็นสิ่งมีขีวิตหรือสิ่งไม่มีชีวิต นอกจากนี้ เรายังได้เริ่มเก็บกระดาษที่ใช้แล้วเพื่อรีไซเคิลด้วย
วันพฤหัส เราเริ่มทำกระเป๋าผ้าจากเสื้อยืดเก่า ที่แต่ละคนนำของตนเองมา บางคนตกแต่งเพิ่มเติมอีกในวันศุกร์ เด็กๆ คงจะภูมิใจที่ได้ถือกระเป๋าที่ใส่เองแถมยังช่วยกันรักษาสิ่งแวดล้อมด้วย
ในวันศุกร์บ่าย เป็นชั่วโมงเซรามิคครั้งแรก เป็นการเรียนเทคนิคการปั้นต่างๆ ซึ่งจะเรียนเพิ่มเติมอีกในสัปดาห์หน้าค่ะ

On the first day of this term, the children were all very happy to see each other again. We had a new member in the classroom, Ging, a 4th grader, moved from Nakorn Nayok province. Many thanks to Sarah and Pizza who have helped Ging settle down in the classroom and have made her feel comfortable and joy.
On Monday, the 4th graders made classroom maps. They needed to measure classroom’s size and all classroom furniture’s sizes so that they could draw the maps at the right scale. The 5th and 6th graders had to make school maps by using real school blueprint plan for measuring and calculating to fit in the given scale. These lessons integrated mathematics and geography subjects. They have done great work!
We have talked about “Global Warming” on Wednesday about the causes and effects. The children had to read the article and write down in their journals about what they could do to help lowering the global warming effect.
Plan for the 2nd semester
Mornings:
- Montessori classroom
- Grade 5s and 6s has tutoring classes for mathematics and science in Thai, 3 hours/week during morning hours.
Afternoons:
- Classes of ESL, Thai language, Thai culture, music, art, PE, occupation & technology.
- Activity for PE Class is rhythmic movement.
- For occupation & technology, children will do ceramic projects for 4 weeks and after that 4th and 5th graders will have basic computer skill classes with Kroo Neung. The 6th graders will have computer class with junior high students on “Basic Computer Programming”.
We are very grateful for the contributions of parents who are coming to help with ceramic projects, Dr. Suthee (Pai’s dad), and with Basic Computer Programming, Khun Ravi (Kawin’s dad). Your dedications are highly appreciated.
Theme : Global Warming (continued)
There will be special activities related to this topic, e.g. making cloth bags from old t-shirts (for use instead of plastic bags), and making recycled paper.

ขอต้อนรับสมาชิกทุกคนกลับสู่โรงเรียนนะคะ เด็กๆ ทักทายกันอย่างสนุกสนานในวันแรก เรามีสมาชิกใหม่หนึ่งคน คือ น้องกิ่ง ที่เพิ่งย้ายมาจากนครนายก ต้องขอขอบคุณน้องซาร่าและพิซซา ที่ช่วยดูแลน้องกิ่งในการปรับตัวเข้ากับห้องเรียน ทำให้น้องกิ่งสนุกกับห้องเรียน
ในวันจันทร์ ป.4 ทำแผนที่ห้องเรียน เด็กๆ ได้วัดขนาดของห้อง และเฟอร์นิเจอร์ทุกชิ้นในห้องเรียน และนำมาวาดแผนที่ตามสเกล ส่วน ป. 5 และ 6 วาดแปลนโรงเรียน โดยดูจากแบบพิมพ์เขียว วัดและคำนวณจากสเกล 1:500 เป็นสเกล 1:1000 กิจกรรมนี้เป็นกิจกรรมที่บูรณาการระหว่างวิชาคณิตศาสตร์และภูมิศาสตร์ เด็กๆ ทำงานกันได้ดีมากค่ะ

Dear parents,
As I was away for the Montessori workshops in Australia, so there were no newsletters for the previous two weeks and this is the last one for this semester.
The two weeks before, I have challenged all children to complete their week plans. Everyone has put much effort on completing theirs and most of them were able to do it.
The group lessons were about water, air and weather. The children have learned about water cycle and observed the clouds in two mornings so as to predict the coming afternoons’ weather. The given lessons focused more on the process of learning and connection to real life rather than the details so that the lessons themselves are joyful and meaningful. However, the children need to show responsibilities for completing work as well.
On the Wednesday of last week, we had a “Big Cleaning Day” for the classroom. We, teachers and children, together helped in cleaning all the shelves, materials, tables, windows and doors. This is a way to show contribution to the community one belongs to. And they were all so helpful and happy doing it. I do appreciate all the children for their helps.
During the coming October holidays, the children were assigned to read books and in addition, older children need to do book reports after readings.
I hope they all enjoy and be refreshed during the holiday.

สวัสดีค่ะผู้ปกครอง
สองสัปดาห์ก่อนหน้านั้นไม่มีจดหมายข่าวออกไปเพราะป้าบุ๋ยของเด็กๆ ไม่อยู่ ไปเข้าอบรมครูมอนเตสซอรี่ และฉบับนี้จะเป็นฉบับสุดท้ายของภาคเรียนนี้นะคะ
ในสองสัปดาห์ก่อนหน้านั้น เด็กๆ ต้องทำงานตามแผนของสัปดาห์นั้นให้เสร็จ ทุกๆ คนได้ตั้งใจทำเป็นอย่างมาก และส่วนใหญ่ก็ทำได้สำเร็จด้วยค่ะ
บทเรียนที่นำเสนอให้กับทั้งห้องคือ เรื่องของน้ำ อากาศ และ สภาพอากาศ ในเรื่องของน้ำ เด็กๆ ได้เรียนรู้ถึงวัฎจักรของน้ำ และ ได้สังเกตเมฆบนท้องฟ้าในตอนเช้า เพื่อทำนายอากาศในตอนบ่ายของวันนั้น บทเรียนที่นำเสนอให้นั้นจะเน้นในกระบวนการเรียนรู้และการเชื่อมโยงกับชีวิตจริงมากกว่ารายละเอียดของเนื้อหาวิชา แต่ในขณะเดียวกัน เด็กๆ ก็ต้องแสดงความรับผิดชอบในการทำงานให้เสร็จตามกำหนดด้วย
ในวันพุธของสัปดาห์สุดท้าย เป็นวันทำความสะอาดของห้องเรียน เราทั้งนักเรียนและครูได้ร่วมกันทำความสะอาดชั้นวางสื่อ สื่อ โต๊ะ ประตู หน้าต่าง ของห้องเรียนทั้งหมด การทำเช่นนี้เป็นการแสดงออกถึงการตอบแทนกลับต่อชุมชนที่เราอยู่ ทุกคนช่วยกันทำอย่างเต็มที่ น่ารักมากทีเดียว ต้องขอบคุณทุกคนเป็นอย่างมากสำหรับงานนี้นะคะ
ในช่วงปิดเทอม ทุกคนต้องอ่านหนังสือที่ได้เลือกเอง และเด็กชั้น ป.5 และ ป. 6 ต้องทำรายงานเพิ่มเติมสำหรับหนังสือที่อ่านด้วย
หวังว่าทุกคนคงจะได้ใช้วันหยุดอย่างสนุกสนานและได้เติมพลังก่อนที่จะกลับมาพบกันใหม่ในภาคเรียนที่ 2 แล้วพบกันนะคะ

Last week the lesson was about earthquakes and it was exciting that a real strong earthquake occurred, centered in Indonesia, which made the lessons more interesting and facing a real situation would help a lot in memorizing the facts about the given lessons.
For the “Self” activity, each day two children will present his or her skills, talents or knowledge to the class. Such activity will foster self esteem or self worth and at the same time make everyone acknowledge others’ skills or talents. I could see that everyone was excited to have to present something to their friends and they all are looking forward to presenting it.
In Montessori classroom, children are free to choose work according to their interests but they are not free to do nothing. The freedom is associated with discipline which means the responsibility to complete the work. However, children have to balance on all subject areas as well, which in our classroom the week plan for work has been set to help managing this.
From now on, the children will be challenged to complete the week plan as scheduled. The challenge aims at practicing the responsibility and discipline and let one taste the pride of success as completing the work as planned. So there may be some children who would not be allowed to have recess during lunch break or would leave school late in the afternoon unless they complete their work. They will not be allowed to bring unfinished work home if the reason is inappropriate.
Our new upper elementary curriculum focus more on preparing children for a higher level of education which will help them adjust easily in the next school both in the academic content and the different method of teaching and learning.

สัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมา เป็นบทเรียนเกี่ยวกับแผ่นดินไหว ซึ่งพอดีกับการเกิดแผ่นดินไหวที่ประเทศอินโดนีเซีย ทำให้เด็กๆ ได้ตื่นเต้น และตระหนักว่าบทเรียนที่เขาได้เรียนนั้น แท้จริงก็คือสิ่งที่ประสบได้ในชีวิตประจำวัน ไม่ใช่เรื่องไกลตัว ทำให้บทเรียนน่าสนใจมากขึ้น รวมทั้งช่วยให้การจดจำสิ่งที่เรียนไปได้แม่นยำมากขึ้นด้วย
สำหรับกิจกรรมเรื่อง “self” เด็กแต่ละคนจะได้มานำเสนอให้เพื่อนๆ ได้รับรู้ว่า ตนมีความเก่ง มีความชำนาญ หรือมีความรู้พิเศษด้านอะไรบ้าง อาจจะเป็นการแสดงความ สามารถ หรือของสะสมที่ตนมีความรู้ความชำนาญเป็นพิเศษ การที่แต่ละคนได้แสดงความสามารถออกมา เป็นการสร้างความรู้สึกมีคุณค่าในตนเอง หรือ “self esteem” และยังเป็นการแสดงให้ทุกคนได้ตระหนักว่า แต่ละคนก็มีความเก่งมีความสามารถที่แตกต่างกัน เราอาจจะต้องพึ่งพาขอความช่วยเหลือ หรือขอความรู้จากคนอื่นที่ชำนาญในเรื่องนั้นๆ เป็นการสร้างความรู้สึกที่ดีต่อกัน และเห็นว่าคนอื่นก็มีคุณค่าเช่นกัน
ในห้องเรียนมอนเตสซอรี่ เด็กทำงานตามความสนใจ และมีอิสระในการเลือกงานที่ตนชอบ แต่ไม่มีอิสระในการที่จะไม่เลือกงานหรือทำงาน แต่ทั้งนี้อิสรภาพที่มีนั้น ต้องอยู่ภายใต้ขอบเขตของวินัย คือมีความรับผิดชอบงานจนสำเร็จ อย่างไรก็ตาม เด็กๆ จะต้องเลือกงานที่ทำได้อย่างสมดุลในทุกวิชา ซึ่งในห้องเรียนของเรา ทุกคนจะได้ทราบแผนงานคร่าวๆ แล้วว่ามีงานอะไรบ้างเป็นอย่างน้อยที่จะต้องเสร็จภายในหนึ่งสัปดาห์
และต่อจากนี้ไป เด็กๆจะได้รับการท้าทายให้ทำงานที่วางแผนไว้ให้เสร็จ เป็นการท้าทายให้เด็กๆ ได้รับรู้รสชาติของความสำเร็จ และเป็นการฝึกความรับผิดชอบและวินัยไปด้วย
พร้อมๆ กัน อาจจะมีบางคนที่ไม่ได้ออกไปเล่นในเวลาพักกลางวัน หรือต้องกลับบ้านช้าบ้าง เพื่อทำงานให้เสร็จ และสำหรับคนที่ทำงานไม่เสร็จตามกำหนด จะไม่อนุญาตให้นำกลับไปทำที่บ้าน ถ้าดูแล้วว่าไม่มีเหตุผลที่เหมาะสม เช่นไม่ได้ใช้เวลาไปในการทำงานแต่พูดคุยหยอกล้อหรือเล่นกันแทน
หลักสูตรใหม่ของระดับชั้นประถมปลายของโรงเรียนจะเน้นการเตรียมตัวเด็กเพื่อเรียนต่อในระดับมัธยม เป็นการช่วยให้เด็กได้ปรับตัวในโรงเรียนใหม่ได้ง่ายขึ้น ทั้งในด้านเนื้อหาวิชาการและวิธีการเรียนการสอนซึ่งแตกต่างออกไป

Last week was the first week that we used English in the classroom for the entire morning until 12 am. The children were capable and did great at this. In fact, they have potential and can express well when the conditions are given. I noticed that they enjoyed talking together in English.
Every Wednesday morning, there will be a math quiz which they need to complete within 15 minutes. This is to practice their test taking skills and to review the lessons they have learnt or are busy learning .
I would like to thank Natas, Kawin and Than for preparing snacks like pancakes, for everyone in the class last Wednesday. Everyone enjoyed it a lot. Besides practicing life skills, organizing and working together, I noticed that it helped in building good feelings towards each other especially thankful feelings for those who prepared the snacks
In “Self” lesson, last week the theme was on feelings. They were asked to think and write down what made them happy, sad, silly and mad, and share with their friends during circle time. After sharing, they became aware that everyone has feelings and the causes for these feeling vary among us. In order to build good interpersonal relationships and living happily together, we should respect and shouldn’t hurt each other’s feelings.
This week the children will explore more on earth science, i.e. types of rocks, earthquakes, water cycles and the atmosphere.
On September 24 – 28, 2007, I will attend a Montessori workshop on Language and Maths in Brisbane, Australia.
Kroo Nat will take care of the class during the period.

สัปดาห์ที่แล้ว เป็นสัปดาห์ที่เราต้องพูดภาษาอังกฤษในห้องเรียนตลอดทั้งช่วงเช้าถึงเที่ยง ปรากฏว่าเด็กๆ ก็ทำกันได้ และทำได้ดีมากทีเดียว จริงๆ แล้วเด็กๆ เขามีศักยภาพกันทุกคนนะคะ เมื่อสถานการณ์ถูกกำหนดให้ต้องพูด ทุกคนก็พูดกันได้ เห็นคุยกันเป็นภาษาอังกฤษกันเสียงดังอย่างสนุกสนานเลยค่ะ
ทุกวันพุธเช้า เด็กๆ จะได้ทำ Math quiz ซึ่งเป็นโจทย์คณิตศาสตร์ที่เรียนผ่านมาแล้ว หรือกำลังเรียนอยู่ ภายในเวลา 15 นาที เพื่อเป็นการฝึกทำโจทย์เลขในเวลาจำกัดและเป็นการทบทวนไปในตัวด้วยค่ะ
สัปดาห์ที่แล้ว ต้องขอบคุณนาธัส กวิน และธัญ ที่ช่วยทำอาหารว่างเป็นแพนเค้ก ให้เพื่อนๆ ทั้งห้องได้อิ่มอร่อยนะคะ แต่รู้สึกว่าคนทำจะเหนื่อยเป็นพิเศษ กิจกรรมนี้นอกจากได้ฝึกกิจกรรมทักษะชีวิตประจำวัน ฝึกการทำงานเป็นกลุ่ม การวางแผนงานแล้ว ยังทำให้เกิดความรู้สึกดีๆ ต่อกันในกลุ่มเพื่อนๆ ด้วยค่ะ โดยเฉพาะความรู้สีกขอบคุณต่อผู้ที่ทำอาหารว่าง
สำหรับบทเรียนเรื่องของการรู้จักตนเอง สัปดาห์ที่แล้วเด็กๆ ได้คิดและเขียนออกมาว่า อะไรทำให้เขามีความสุข อะไรทำให้เขาเศร้า อะไรทำให้เขารู้สึกเซ่อซ่าหรือตลกขบขัน และอะไรที่ทำให้เขาโกรธ หลังจากนั้นให้ทุกคนมาอ่านสิ่งที่ตนคิดให้เพื่อนทั้งห้องฟัง เพื่อที่ทุกคนจะได้รับรู้ว่าแต่ละคนมีความรู้สึกอารมณ์ และต้นเหตุของความรู้สึกของแต่ละคนก็แตกต่างกัน เราควรเคารพในความรู้สึกของคนอื่น และไม่ทำในสิ่งที่ทำให้เพื่อนรู้สึกไม่ดี ซึ่งเป็นสิ่งที่เราควรจะคำนึงถึงในการอยู่ร่วมกัน
สำหรับสัปดาห์นี้ เราจะยังทำงานในหัวข้อเรื่องโลก คือ ชนิดของหิน การเกิดแผ่นดินไหว วัฎจักรของน้ำ และบรรยากาศของโลก
วันที่ 24 – 28 กันยายน 2550 ป้าบุ๋ย หรือครูบุ๋ย ขอลาชั่วคราวไปเข้า Montessori workshop ในหัวข้อเรื่องคณิตศาสตร์และภาษาที่ Brisbane, Australia นะคะ ในระหว่างนี้ ครูแน๊ตจะเป็นผู้ดูแลห้องเรียนค่ะ

Last week the lessons were about the solar system and the earth. The children have explored and discovered the basic facts of each planet. Then they found out how day time and night time occurred, time difference around the world and the happening of seasons.
The new activity in the classroom will be Practical Life activity. In groups of 3-4 children, they will prepare morning snacks for everyone in the classroom once a week, on Wednesdays. Besides fun and full, they will learn to work cooperatively with their peers.
The fifth and sixth graders have been getting tutoring classes for math and science 3 hours a week for 3 weeks now, preparing for the National Test. The test papers are all in Thai. They have already learnt those subjects in English in the classroom and the tutoring classes will get them more familiar with the specific terms in Thai so that they can do the test effectively.
Do you notice your child’s reading progression? I was amazed by how great they were doing on this. They do enjoy reading their own-chosen books. Some have finished the third and some the fourth books already.
This week, I plan to add some more activities on “self”, guiding them to understand their emotions, either positive or negative feelings, and recognize their abilities which finally they will realize and understand individual uniqueness. Hopefully, increasing self-esteem would make one realize the importance of respecting others as well.

สัปดาห์ที่แล้ว บทเรียนในห้องเรียนเป็นเรื่องเกี่ยวกับSolar system และโลก การเกิดกลางวันกลางคืน เวลาที่แตกต่างกันในแต่ละส่วนของโลก และฤดูกาลต่างๆ
กิจกรรมอื่นที่จะมีเพิ่มเติม เป็นกิจกรรมที่เสริมทักษะชีวิตประจำวัน คือ การเตรียมอาหารว่างในช่วงเช้า โดยให้เด็กแต่ละกลุ่มๆ ละ 3-4 คน เป็นคนคิดและเตรียมอาหารว่างที่เป็นอาหาร 1 ชนิด และเครื่องดื่ม 1 ชนิด ให้กับทุกคนในห้องเรียนทุกวันพุธค่ะ กิจกรรมนี้ก็ทั้งสนุก อร่อย และอิ่ม รวมทั้งจะได้ฝึกทำงานเป็นกลุ่ม รู้จักการทำงานร่วมกันด้วย
สำหรับน้องๆ ชั้น ป.5 และ ป.6 ทางโรงเรียนได้จัดให้มีการสอนพิเศษเพิ่มเติมในวิชาคณิตศาสตร์และวิทยาศาสตร์ เพื่อเป็นการเตรียมสอบข้อสอบแห่งชาติ (NT) ในวันพฤหัสและศุกร์ สัปดาห์ละ 3 ชั่วโมงค่ะ ทั้งนี้เนื่องจากว่าข้อสอบวิชาดังกล่าวเป็นภาษาไทย ซึ่งเด็กๆ ได้เรียนเป็นภาษาอังกฤษในห้องเรียนแล้ว และจำเป็นต้องรู้ภาษาไทย เพราะเป็นวิชาที่มีคำศัพท์เฉพาะเป็นจำนวนมาก ซึ่งจะช่วยให้ทำข้อสอบได้อย่างเข้าใจมากขึ้น
ผ่านมา 4 สัปดาห์ คุณพ่อคุณแม่สังเกตเห็นว่าเด็กๆ อ่านหนังสือกันมากขึ้นหรือเปล่าค่ะ เห็นแต่ละคนอ่านกันไปแล้ว 3 – 4 เล่ม ท่าทางจะสนุกสนานกันมากเลย และในห้องเรียนทุกคนก็เริ่มเข้าที่ สามารถทำตามกฎในห้องเรียน โดยเฉพาะการพูดภาษาอังกฤษในห้องเรียนทำได้อย่างดีทีเดียวค่ะ
สัปดาห์นี้ เด็กๆจะได้ทำกิจกรรมเพิ่มเติมในเรื่องการรู้จักตนเองทั้งในแง่อารมณ์ความรู้สึกและความสามารถ และเข้าใจว่าแต่ละคนมีความแตกต่าง โดยคาดหวังว่าการที่เด็กๆ ได้รู้จักและเห็นคุณค่าในตนเองจะทำให้เขาเข้าใจผู้อื่นและเคารพผู้อื่นมากขึ้นค่ะ

The essential lessons in Montessori elementary program are the Five Great Lessons, which is called “Cosmic Education”.
The Five Great Lessons are connected stories that span the vast history frames from the beginning of the Universe, formation of our solar system and earth, first life on earth, followed by many species of life including plants and animals, and finally the evolution of humans on earth, which are different from others by “love”. These stories are called “Story of the Universe”, “the Coming of Life”, and “the Coming of Humans”. The last two stories are the “Story of Numbers”, and the “Story of Communication in Signs”, which include history of numbers and languages.
The Great Lessons provide the children an overview or big picture of everything in their lives, e.g. earth, sun, moon, stars in the sky, living and non-living things, numbers and language they are using, and the beginning of their own lives. The stories build a concept of interdependence and the interconnectedness of everything for example if there was no earth, no sun, no other living and non-living things, there would not be us today. From this big picture leads to the details of disciplines: astronomy, biology, zoology, physical science, geography, social studies, mathematics and language, which the children will explore and investigate through research work, individually or in groups, from many resources, e.g. library, experiments, Internet, and resources outside the school.
Today, educators believe that learning the big picture and understanding the interconnectedness of each subject are the most effective learning process, regarding recent researches on learning functions of thebrain.
Beside academic knowledge and skills, Cosmic Education helps create a sense of interdependence and unity of all in children, which hopefully will build good feelings in people and the world around them and finally they will give back, making contributions to the society, and help creating a peaceful world. That is the true meaning or the ultimate goal of Montessori Education.

บทเรียนสำคัญในมอนเตสซอรี่ระดับประถมคือ
The Five Great Lessons ซึ่งเมื่อรวมกับวิชาต่างๆ แล้ว
มอนเตสซอรี่จะใช้คำว่า Cosmic Education หรือขอเรียกเป็นไทยให้เข้าใจง่ายๆ นะคะว่าเป็น วิชาครอบจักรวาล
ห้าเรื่องที่ยิ่งใหญ่นั้นเป็นเรื่องเล่าเรื่องราวในประวัติศาสตร์นับตั้งแต่ กำเนิดของจักรวาล กำเนิดของสิ่งมีชีวิตบนโลก กำเนิดมนุษย์ ซึ่งสามเรื่องแรกนี้เป็นการเล่าที่มาของจักรวาล การเกิดขึ้นของดวงดาวต่างๆ มาจนถึงระบบสุริยะของโลกเรา จนกระทั่งมีสิ่งมีชีวิตชนิดแรกเกิดขึ้นบนโลก ตามมาด้วยสัตว์และพืชต่างๆ อีกมากมายหลายล้านชนิด ผ่านมาหลายยุคหลายสมัย เป็นเวลาหลายล้านปี จนกระทั่งมีวิวัฒนาการเป็นมนุษย์ขึ้นมาบนโลก มนุษย์ซึ่งแตกต่างจากสัตว์อื่นตรงที่มี ความรัก
ส่วนสองเรื่องสุดท้ายจะเป็นเรื่องราวของวิวัฒนาการของมนุษย์ อารยธรรมต่างๆ ประวัติความเป็นมาของตัวเลขซึ่งเป็นที่มาของวิชาคณิตศาสตร์ และที่มาของภาษาที่ใช้สื่อสารกันของมนุษย์
เรื่องราวอันยิ่งใหญ่นี้ จะทำให้เด็กๆ ได้เห็นภาพรวม (big picture) ของทุกสิ่งทุกอย่างรอบตัวเขา ที่มาของโลก ของดวงดาวบนท้องฟ้า ของทั้งสิ่งมีชีวิตและไม่มีชีวิต วิวัฒนาการตัวเลข ภาษาที่ใช้ จนกระทั่งมาถึงตัวเขาเอง ได้เห็นการเชื่อมโยงของสิ่งต่างๆ ได้เห็นว่าการเกิดขึ้นของมนุษย์ หรือของตัวเขานั้น มีความเชื่อมโยงกับสิ่งต่างๆ ในโลกอย่างแยกจากกันไม่ได้ เช่น ถ้าไม่มีโลก ก็จะไม่มีตัวเขา ถ้าไม่มีสิ่งมีชีวิตอื่น ก็จะไม่มีเขาในวันนี้เช่นกัน
จากภาพรวมนี้ เขาก็จะค่อยๆ ได้เรียนรู้ลงไปในรายละเอียด ซึ่งก็คือวิชาต่างๆ เหมือนกับที่เราเคยเรียนกันมา เช่น ในเรื่องของกำเนิดจักรวาล ซึ่งเด็กๆ ในห้องประถมปลายได้รับฟังไปในสัปดาห์ที่แล้ว หลังจากนี้เด็กๆ จะได้เรียนใน
รายละเอียดเกี่ยวกับดาราศาสตร์ วิทยาศาสตร์ (สสาร แรง พลังงาน) และภูมิศาสตร์ ซึ่งการเรียนรู้ในรายละเอียดนี้ จะผ่านการเรียนแบบ Research ให้เด็กได้หาความรู้เองจากแหล่งต่างๆ เช่น ห้องสมุด อินเตอร์เน็ต การทดลอง หรือ แหล่งความรู้นอกโรงเรียน
และในครั้งต่อไปเมื่อเขาได้รับฟังเรื่องที่สอง คือ กำเนิดสิ่งมีชีวิตบนโลก ซึ่งจะเป็นเรื่องของชีววิทยา นิเวศวิทยา ส่วนเรื่องที่เหลือ ก็จะครอบคลุมทั้งวิชาวิทยาศาสตร์ ชีววิทยา และสังคม วัฒนธรรม
การเรียนให้เห็นภาพรวม และให้เห็นการเชื่อมโยงของวิชาต่างๆ เป็นสิ่งที่นักการศึกษาในปัจจุบันยอมรับว่าเป็นการเรียนที่ได้ผล และสอดคล้องกับการเรียนรู้ของสมองมากที่สุด
นอกจากผลที่ได้ในเชิงวิชาการคือ ความรู้ในวิชาต่างๆ แล้ว Cosmic Education ยังมีจุดหมายที่จะให้เด็กๆ ได้เห็นความเชื่อมโยงและพึ่งพาอาศัยซึ่งกันและกันของสิ่งต่างๆ ความเป็นหนึ่งเดียวกัน ซึ่งจะชักนำให้เกิดความรู้สึกที่ดีกับโลกกับผู้คนรอบๆ ตัวเขา และความหวังสุดท้ายคือ เขาจะรู้สึกอยากตอบแทนหรือให้กลับต่อผู้คนและสังคม เพื่อการอยู่ร่วมกันอย่างสงบสุข และนี่คือความหมายที่แท้จริงและเป็นเป้าหมายหลักของการศึกษาแบบมอนเตสซอรี่

Last week, the children still were getting themselves familiar with the English-speaking environment. There were those who quickly got it and those who still needed more time to be settled. We have talked about freedom within limits in the classroom, e.g. freedom of choice, freedom of thoughts and speech and freedom of movement, which is followed under the classroom rules. But the freedom will be limited if they didn’t follow the rules, for example they would not be allowed to sit, talk and work together if they did not speak English; they would not be allowed to sit and work together if they were playing instead of working.
In order for the rules to be followed and respected, adults need to be firm, fair and consistent. It’s not easy, though. Sometimes you might feel like giving up!
On Thursday, we talked about teasing and using rude words. They were guided to analyze the pros and cons of doing those kinds of behavior and agreed to avoid those things. If they hear anyone doing that, they will help by reminding those who did.
Last weekend, some children took their unfinished work home because they could not finish it on time. This is a way of practicing responsibility and self discipline. Parents could help by setting a place that they are able to sit and work quietly alone.

Field Trip
This was the first activity of the classroom on “Global Warming Project”. At the Science Week at Mae Fah Luang University, they were assigned to do research on earth’s climate change. We are working on the next activity of this project, which is probably a camp or workshop. Many thanks ahead to parents, Kroo Ked, Khun Weerapong (Anna’s dad), Khun Angkrit (Ukao’s dad) who are going to help setting up the activities.

สัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมา เด็กๆ ยังได้ทำความคุ้นเคยกับการพูดภาษาอังกฤษในห้องเรียนอยู่ บางคนก็จะเริ่มชินบ้างแล้ว แต่บางคนก็ยังคงต้องใช้เวลาสักเล็กน้อย เพราะเป็นสิ่งที่เด็กๆ ไม่เคยทำมาก่อน เราคุยกันว่าในห้องเรียนเด็กๆ มีอิสระแต่เป็นอิสระภายใต้ขอบเขต เช่น ทุกคนมีอิสระที่จะทำงานที่ตนเองเลือก ที่จะพูดคุยปฏิสัมพันธ์กับเพื่อนระหว่างทำงาน และเดินไปเดินมาในห้องเรียนได้ แต่ต้องอยู่ภายใต้ขอบเขตคือกฎของห้องเรียน มิฉะนั้นเขาก็จะไม่ได้รับอิสระนั้น ยกตัวอย่างเช่น ถ้าในการพูดคุยกับเพื่อนที่นั่งทำงานด้วยกันในห้องเรียน เขาไม่ใช้ภาษาอังกฤษ เขาก็จะไม่ได้รับอนุญาตให้นั่งทำงานด้วยกัน หรือถ้าเขาเล่นกันในห้องเรียน ก็แสดงว่าไม่ใส่ใจทำงานที่เลือกมาเอง ก็จะต้องให้ครูเป็นผู้เลือกงานและกำหนดกลุ่มเพื่อนที่จะทำงานให้
การช่วยให้เด็กทุกคนเคารพและทำตามกฎ ผู้ใหญ่ต้องหนักแน่น สม่ำเสมอและเสมอภาค ซึ่งเป็นงานที่จะว่ายากก็ยาก จะว่าง่ายก็ง่าย บางทีเราก็จะรู้สึกใจอ่อนเหมือนกัน ใช่ไหมคะ
วันพฤหัส เราคุยกันเรื่องการพูดจาล้อเลียน และการพูดคำหยาบ เด็กๆ ได้คิดเปรียบเทียบว่ามีข้อดีข้อเสียอย่างไรบ้าง ทุกคนก็เห็นว่า มีข้อเสียมากกว่าข้อดี และไม่ควรทำ และในช่วงแรกที่บางคนอาจเผลอพูด ก็ให้เพื่อนช่วยเตือนกันเองก่อน
ช่วงสุดสัปดาห์ อาจจะมีน้องบางคนเอางานกลับไปทำที่บ้าน ก็เนื่องมาจากว่าเขาทำงานในห้องเรียนไม่เสร็จตามที่ตั้งเป้าหมายไว้ เป็นการฝึกความรับผิดชอบและสร้างวินัยในตนเอง คุณพ่อคุณแม่ช่วยได้ด้วยการจัดสถานที่ที่เขาจะได้ทำงานคนเดียวอย่างสงบนะคะ

การไปทัศนศึกษาครั้งนี้ เด็กๆ ต้องไปหาข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับ “ภาวะโลกร้อน” ซึ่งหัวเรื่องดังกล่าวจะเป็นโครงงานที่ห้องประถมปลายจะได้เรียนรู้และหาข้อมูลกันต่อ ซึ่งกิจกรรมต่อไปเราอาจจะจัดเป็นค่าย หรือ workshop งานนี้ต้องขอขอบคุณล่วงหน้าสำหรับทีมที่จะมาช่วยคิดและช่วยทำ คือ ครูเกด คุณวีระพงษ์ (คุณพ่อน้องอันนา) และคุณอังกฤษ (คุณพ่อน้องอู่ข้าว)

Hello parents,
This newsletter serves as an informal communication between the classroom and home. As a family school concept, good communication between the school and home will probably bring good understanding in children, making them feel safe and happy which eventually will have an effect on their learning and progressions.
On the first day after the break, the children coming back to school fresh and active, I introduced myself and let them call me “Pa Bui” or “Aunt Bui” instead. During morning circle, we discussed about classroom rules such as why we needed them. I guided them in setting our classroom rules which were based on 3 standards of behavior as follows:
1. Treat your self, others and everything with respect.
2. Do to others as you would like them to do to you.
3. Everyone must feel safe in the classroom.
Finally, they came out with 7 rules. You may ask and talk to your child about these rules.
In creating English environment, it is one of the classroom rules that we should use English in interacting with each other. The children cooperated very well; they started and continued speaking to each other in English for almost one and a half hour. We decided to slowly increased the amount of time in speaking English each day until we could do it for the entire morning work hours from 8.30 am to 12 am
The children have started writing their own journal books, recording work done each day, which they will take back home on Friday. I think they would love to share it with you the things that they have done at school. Have a good time with your child!

New Classroom Schedule
ESL (English as a Secondary Language) 2 times a week has been added up. I have started “Reading Program” with the children, particularly focusing on independent reading, which is as much important as reading for comprehension since enjoyment in reading will nurture the love in reading. Children are encouraged to choose their own reading books which should be fictions or chapter books appropriate to their ages and language capabilities and they will be guided to choose more challenging books later on. The set goals for number of books to be read within this school year are minimum of 10 books for G4, 12 books for G5 and 15 books for G6.
At the end of the school day, Monday through Thursday, please come and pick up your child at 3.45 pm because they are divided into small groups in the afternoons and they should come back to their homeroom at 3.30 pm for conclusion and clean up.

สวัสดีค่ะคุณพ่อคุณแม่
จดหมายข่าวนี้ถือเป็นการเล่าสู่เรื่องราวต่างๆ ในห้องเรียนอย่างไม่ทางการนะคะ เพราะคิดว่าการสื่อสารที่มากขึ้นระหว่างโรงเรียนกับที่บ้านตามแนวคิด Family school จะทำให้เกิดความเข้าใจที่ดีต่อกัน ระหว่างบ้านกับโรงเรียน ทำให้เราเข้าใจเด็กๆ ของเรามากขึ้น การดูแลก็จะง่ายขึ้น เด็กๆ ก็จะรู้สึกว่าผู้ใหญ่ทุกคนที่อยู่รอบตัวเขาเข้าใจเขา ทำให้เขามีความสุข ซึ่งก็จะส่งผลให้การเรียนรู้ของเขามีความก้าวหน้าอย่างมีความสุขเช่นกัน
เริ่มสัปดาห์แรกหลังจากได้หยุดพักกันมา วันแรกทุกคนก็ดูสดชื่นกันทีเดียว หลังจากบุ๋ยแนะนำตัวเองกับเด็กๆ และให้เขาเรียกว่า “ป้าบุ๋ย” (รู้สึกว่าตัวเองแก่จัง) เราก็ได้มาคุยกันเรื่องกฎในห้องเรียนค่ะ ว่าทำไมเราจึงต้องมีกฎ โดยให้เด็กๆ ได้ร่วมกันเสนอกฎขึ้นมา ภายใต้ข้อตกลงใหญ่ๆ 3 ข้อคือ
- ปฏิบัติต่อทั้งตัวเอง ผู้อื่น และสิ่งแวดล้อมด้วยความเคารพ
- ปฏิบัติต่อผู้อื่น อย่างที่อยากให้เขาปฏิบัติต่อเรา
- ทุกคนต้องรู้สึกปลอดภัยเมื่ออยู่ในห้องเรียน
เราได้ทำความเข้าใจกันเรื่อง “เคารพ” มีการยกตัวอย่างของ พฤติกรรมที่เคารพและไม่เคารพ จนในที่สุดในก็ได้ข้อสรุปเป็นกฎมา 7 ข้อ ลองถามเด็กๆ ดูนะคะว่ามีอะไรบ้าง
สำหรับการพูดภาษาอังกฤษในห้องเรียน เราก็ได้กำหนดให้เป็นกฎข้อหนึ่งของห้องเรียน ปรากฏว่าถึงแม้จะเป็นช่วงเวลาสั้นๆ วันละ 1-1.5ชม. ในช่วงเช้า เด็กๆ ก็ให้ความร่วมมือเป็นอย่างดี และทำได้ดีทีเดียวค่ะ เราตกลงกันว่า จะค่อยๆ เพิ่มเวลาขึ้นทีละนิด และเป้าหมายที่เราตั้งไว้ก็คือ เราจะใช้ภาษาอังกฤษพูดคุยกันในช่วงเช้าจนถึงเที่ยงของทุกวัน ที่บ้านอย่าลืมให้กำลังใจเด็กๆ กันบ้างนะคะ
นอกจากนี้เด็กๆ ยังได้เริ่มเขียนบันทึก Journal book ซึ่งเขาจะนำกลับไปบ้านทุกวันศุกร์ เด็กๆ คงจะดีใจและภูมิใจถ้าได้ให้คุณพ่อคุณแม่ได้ดูว่าเขาทำงานอะไรบ้างในสัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมา บุ๋ย

New Classroom Schedule
1. ESL (English as a Secondary Language) สัปดาห์ละ 2 ครั้งกับครู Sue ซึ่งจะเน้นเรื่องการเขียนและการพูดภาษาอังกฤษ
2. Reading Program นอกจากการอ่านกับครูเพื่อความเข้าใจแล้ว ยังรวมถึงการอ่านด้วยตนเอง (independent reading) เพื่อสร้างนิสัยรักการอ่าน ซึ่งเด็กๆ จะต้องเลือกหนังสือเองซึ่งควรจะเป็นหนังสือที่เหมาะสมและท้าทายกับความสามารถและระดับการใช้ภาษาอังกฤษของเขา โดยมีกำหนดจำนวนเล่มไว้คร่าวๆ ว่าต้องอ่านได้ อย่างน้อย 10 เล่มเมื่อจบชั้น ป.4 12 เล่มเมื่อจบชั้น ป.5 และ 15 เล่มเมื่อจบชั้น ป. 6 คุณพ่อคุณแม่อาจจะลองใช้เวลาว่างๆ พูดคุยกับลูกเกี่ยวกับหนังสือที่อ่าน ให้ลูกเล่าให้ฟังว่าเรื่องเป็นอย่างไร ด้วยความรู้สึกเชื่อใจและไว้วางใจในตัวเขา ก็จะช่วยสร้างความรู้สึกภาคภูมิใจในตัวเองให้เด็กๆ ได้ค่ะ
ส่วนเวลาเลิกเรียนของ วันจันทร์ ถึงวันพฤหัส อยากจะขอให้คุณพ่อคุณแม่มารับเด็กๆ เวลาประมาณ 15.45 น. เพราะช่วงบ่ายเขาจะต้องแบ่งกลุ่มไปเรียนวิชาต่างๆ และทุกคนจะต้องกลับมาที่ห้อง เพื่อสรุปงานและทำความสะอาดห้อง ซึ่งอาจจจะทำให้เลิกเรียนช้าไปเล็กน้อยค่ะ

วันศุกร์ที่ 17 สิงหาคม เด็กๆ จะไปทัศนศึกษางานสัปดาห์วิทยาศาตร์ ที่มหาวิทยาลัยแม่ฟ้าหลวง สำหรับเวลาที่แน่นอนจะแจ้งให้ทราบต่อไป
Parent Classrooom Observation
ขอเชิญคุณพ่อคุณแม่เข้ามาสังเกตการณ์การเรียนการสอนในห้องประถมปลายระหว่างวันอังคารที่ 21 – วันศุกร์ที่ 24 สิงหาคม โดยแต่ละครอบครัวจะมีเวลาครึ่งชั่วโมง และเข้าสังเกตได้ครั้งละ 2 คน ขอเชิญลงชื่อจองเวลาได้ที่หน้าห้องเรียนประถมปลาย
